The calculators give planning estimates based on the numbers you enter and the formulas on the methodology page. They can be wrong if your measurements are wrong, if your situation doesn't match the assumptions, or if we've made a mistake. Measure, check and test before you cut.
Not professional advice
Nothing on this site is engineering, architectural or legal advice. Code references point to the 2021 International Residential Code as published; your jurisdiction may have adopted a different edition or local amendments. Structural work, stairs, guards and anything that needs a permit should be checked with your building department and, where required, a licensed professional.
Using the calculators
You can use the calculators for personal and commercial projects, print the results, and share result links. Please don't scrape the site in bulk, resell the calculators, or present them as your own work.
Embedding
